My Buy Nothing New Rules

December 28th, 2006 at 09:48 pm

1. With a few exceptions I will buy nothing new.

2 The period of the challenge will be for an initial three months beginning January 1, 2007. I will reevaluate the challenge in March and make a decision whether or not to continue it.

3. No Sytrofoam cups. If I can't remember to bring my coffee cup I don't get coffee.

4. Only one package of paper towels per month. This will be used for cooking (micorwave) purposes not cleaning.

5. Exceptions.
1. all necessary hygenie and basic
cleaning supplies, deodorant etc.
2. all necessary repairs and
maintenance to the house and car.
3. Basic functional underwear
4. e-books The orginial compactors
group permitted downloadable music
because there was no material
product, after some thought I have
decided that this logic also
applies to downable text.
5. Any prescription or non-
prescriptions items needed for
health reasons.
6. I am also suspending the challenge
during any travel.

Wish me luck. I have a feeling I'm going to need it.

Good Luck!!!!! I am not quite so ambitious. Though I would like to document everything new I buy and see if I can pare it down. I get the feeling I don't buy much new, but as with anything when you write it all down you are surprised.

Anyway, a very ambitious goal. I wish you luck indeed!

I am planning on recording all 'new' purchases starting January first too!...I hope to keep it a short list.......not forbidding myself from buying, just trying to see what I do buy...so I know how hard it would be to actually do it......

Hello. I think this is a great challenge. I applaud your efforts to live a simpler and more economically sound life, even if for a brief period of time. As a person who works in a library, I would say you should check out your public library or library of any institution with which you are affiliated. The library I work in has a ton of electronically accessible material, much of which can be downloaded. Plus, there's all those books and videos to check out for free.

About a year ago, my husband and I decided to cut down on a lot of stuff, including completely cutting out laundry detergent and fabric softener. We bought a Miracle II Laundry Ball (http://www.miracle2.net/product/product_m2laundryball.asp) which we toss into the washer with the dirty clothes and out come clean clothes. I don't really understand how it works, but it does work. No, I am not a salesperson, just a satisfied customer. Let us all know how your challenge turns out.

Thank you all for your good wishes. We'll see how I do. Ideally I'd like to do this for a year. However, I left myself an escape clause lol.

Oooh, for downloading e-books, and if your e-book can read .txt files, think about the Gutenberg Project. Lots of classics and they wouldn't be new! Big Grin

I use project gutenberg quite a bit unfortunately they don't have everything I want to read.
